NEWS RELEASE

LOCAL SALES TAX PROPOSED FOR FERGUS FALLS SCHOOLS

ST. PAUL-The Fergus Falls school district wants to impose a local sales tax, and has asked State Rep. Bud Nornes to help them gain the state’s approval to do so.

Nornes (R-Fergus Falls) has introduced legislation (HF3994), which if approved, would allow the district to impose the tax.

“This is becoming a common request,” he said. “Communities are looking to improve their infrastructures and the fairest method to raise the needed funds is through a sales tax.”

The bill calls for District 544 to hold a referendum in November, or before Dec. 31, 2008, requesting $30 million.

Nisswa is scheduled to hold a similar referendum in November for 1 percent sales tax. Motor vehicle sales would be limited to a total tax of $20. The funds generated would be used to build a new high school for grades 9-12, and to renovate, expand and repair Fergus Falls Middle School.

The taxes imposed in the district would expire after 20 years or when the school board rules that the amount of revenue raised equals or exceeds the projected amount. Any remaining funds must be placed in the district’s general fund. The board could also pass a resolution terminating the tax if desired.

If the Legislature grants approval and the proposal is approve in a referendum, each of the taxes would take effect the day after the school board OKs it.
