Statement on Redistricting
Today, the five-judge Special Redistricting Panel released Minnesota’s new state legislative and Congressional district maps for the next decade.
State Representative Mary Murphy (DFL-Hermantown), the DFL lead on the House redistricting committee, issued the following statement:
“The Special Redistricting Panel devised a redistricting plan that should reflect large amounts of public testimony and the redistricting principles and criteria adopted by the court.
A total number of 30 legislators have been paired in redrawn districts. Of these seats, 6 pair incumbent Democrats, 6 pair incumbent Republicans, and 3 pair a Democrat and a Republican incumbent. In addition, there are now 15 open seats with no incumbent legislator. (See attachment for more details.)
For sure, there are 30 competitive districts. At this time, I urge each legislator to take time to fully assess their new district and then move forward on the important issues that matter to all Minnesotans: jobs and the economy. Bread and butter issues are what constituents care about in each and every legislative district, old or new."
