Rep. Mullery asked to Lead Mental Health Caucus

I was honored to be asked to revive the legislative caucus on mental health. Mindy Greiling, the leading legislative voice on mental health issues, is retiring this year. Last year Linda Berglin, a strong voice in the state senate on mental health issues, retired. Rep. Greiling and Sue Abderholden, Executive Director of National Alliance on Mental Illness Minnesota requested that I resurrect the caucus.

I was a recent recipient of Legislator of the Year award from the National Alliance on Mental Illness. Unlike most other legislators who have been active on the issue, I have had no one with mental illness in my family. However, in my work as a leader on youth development, juvenile justice reform, and reentry of prisoners, I have found mental health to be a major issue.

Unfortunately, the general public does not fully understand the implications to our society of failing to deal with mental health issues. As I take the helm of this important working group, I look forward to creating a better awareness of this issue.
