Brain Development Research

Recently I was at a special meeting with Charlyn Harper Browne, the Director of the Quality Improvement Center for the Center for the Study of Social Policy in Washington D.C.

Current studies prove that an infant’s environment greatly affects the child's success in life. For a child in a family with income under 200% of poverty, there is a standard deviation from normal of only .1, but at two years, it is .5. While the infant of a college-educated couple is hearing 1200 words, the infant of a non-college educated working couple is only hearing 600 words, and the infant of a couple on welfare only hear 500 words.

Society has to help these children receive equal opportunity. We also have to help the parents improve their efforts.

About 40% of childcare nationally is rated "poor"; yet only 15% is rated "good". That is why we are trying to rate child care in this state, and strengthen the opportunities for children. The studies also stressed the importance of the continuity of the child’s teachers from birth to age 3, and the value of someone in day care speaking the language used in the child's home. Obviously, many families don't have these problems, but the studies indicate many must be helped.
