As I talk to people all over our northside community, they continually speak of long-term unemployment in their family or their neighbors. Obviously, that contributes to decline for our neighborhoods, especially for foreclosures and our local stores.
At the same time, recent studies show that some businesses are using unemployment as a reason for not hiring applicants. Other studies show that an unemployed worker is no worse than an employed worker for a new job.
Therefore, I introduced two bills to protect our neighbors who have been trying to find a job. The first would provide that an employer cannot discriminate in their hiring practices against a person who is unemployed when they apply for work. The second would give a tax credit to companies who hire people who have been unemployed for over 12 months, if they have been seriously looking for work all that time. Both these bills would help our unemployed neighbors, but by helping them it helps all of us.
