ANOTHER CUT TO RENTERS' CREDIT

The renter's credit is a provision which gives back to a renter part of what they pay in property taxes which are included in their rent payment. It is like the Property Tax Refund for homeowners. Over a fourth of the renters receiving the credit are seniors or disabled.

The Republican committee chair this week introduced a bill cutting the renters credit so that he could reduce business taxes. He also introduced a bill taking away the Minneapolis sales tax which goes to pay for the convention center and the visitor's bureau. That would mean that in the future the city's property tax would have to pay for the operations of the convention center and all of our tourism efforts, despite the fact that the convention center is the one entity in this state (other than the Mall) which brings in a huge amount of tax dollars from outside the state.
