Dear Friends and Neighbors:
I toured damaged neighborhoods today across Minneapolis. The Northside was hit by what many believe may be one of the worst tornadoes to hit an urban area in the history of Minnesota. I want to thank and congratulate all the city, county, state and private workers who have done such a great job. Police, fire, emergency services, utility workers and most of all our fantastic Northside neighbors have been helping each other.
After touring the destruction left in the wake of yesterday’s storm, I want to make sure my neighbors have useful information as they work to recover and rebuild. As I walked and drove around the hardest hit areas last night and today I was repeatedly asked by residents who they could use to repair their house or garage. I have heard reports of unscrupulous repair workers in the affected areas.
If your property was damaged, make sure you don’t hire a repair contractor without thoroughly checking them out. In order to help affected residents, Thor Construction has agreed to serve as a referral and screening service. They will check the records and insurance coverage of repair contractors and indicate whether they appear to be okay to use. Thor’s number is 763-571-2580.
Contact your insurance agent directly. There may be people who are trying to get access to your insurance repair money. Many of them are scams.
If residents need food, water, shelter or other services, phone 311 for assistance. I spoke earlier today to the head of emergency assistance for the state and they will be canvassing our neighborhoods beginning Thursday while working to get federal emergency funds. If the Northside is declared an emergency area, residents can get temporary housing or rent assistance, replacement of some personal property, home repairs and some medical bills. The maximum assistance for an individual homeowner is $30,300. Note that landlords do not receive help from FEMA.
I also spoke today with Governor Dayton, Senator Klobuchar and the Speaker of the Minnesota House who all promised help. One area that needs immediate attention is infrastructure. I am working to get the state to pitch in immediately.
There may be some property tax assistance for affected people with severe damage, but the reduction wouldn’t come until next year. I’m working to speed up the process and make it effective for the October property tax payment.
This storm, coupled with the foreclosure crisis has challenged our community. Northsiders are resilient. I’ve lived here my whole life and know we’ll recover stronger than we were. Feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns at 651-296-4262.
