(ST. PAUL) – The Minnesota House of Representatives today passed a public safety omnibus funding bill that funds the Department of Corrections, state courts and the Department of Public Safety. State Representative Joe Mullery (DFL – Minneapolis), DFL lead on the Public Safety committee, released the following statement:
“This bill jeopardizes public safety. There are many cuts that endanger our neighbors and communities across the state. It’s just plain wrong to compromise our safety so Republicans can keep extremely rich people from paying their fair share of taxes.
Women who are raped or severely beaten won’t get necessary services. Gangs will have new opportunities to spread their violence across our state. By cutting community crime prevention, we tell our neighborhoods that they better lock their doors and be prepared for more crime.
Cutting supervision of ex-offenders makes no sense. All studies show that strong supervision along with mental health and chemical dependency treatment, causes reductions in recidivism.
In addition to jeopardizing public safety, this bill creates huge, new unfunded mandates on local governments. This will lead to large increases in property taxes."
