I authored a bill to provide funding for diversity training for teachers, which has been so successful at our Patrick Henry High School. For a short time, the school board funded an initiative at Patrick Henry to train teachers to work with diverse students. Obviously in today’s age, it is extremely important for teachers to be able to work with students of diverse backgrounds, cultures, and abilities. Even though that program received statewide recognition for its excellence, the school board cut off the funding for it. Therefore, I introduced a bill to have the state grant the necessary money to Patrick Henry to reinstate the initiative. It was well received at the hearing, and even the Commissioner of Education indicated their office heard very positive comments about the program. In fact, the chair of the committee told me it would be included in the funding bill. The next week, however, (after she had met with other leaders) that grant was not included in the funding bill. My sources indicated that it was perceived by too many legislators that Minneapolis was getting far too much money in general in this year’s funding bill, and another new program for Minneapolis schools “did not go over well".
