HIGHER EDUCATION

Over the years of Governor Pawlenty’s reign, tuition increases at the state’s public colleges and universities have been over 70 percent. That is just plain unconscionable, especially for students who live in our community. We made revisions that should keep tuition inflation under double digits. We also give low- and middle-income taxpayers a deduction of up to $4,000 for higher education tuition and expenses.

Overall, higher education received more than $3 billion, which was a 13 percent increase. A special provision will give up to $1,000 per semester for returning GIs (if they served 90 days in combat or five years in the National Guard).

Because we have so many complaints about college students running up huge credit card debt when they are first away from their parents, we passed a law that prohibits colleges from providing information to companies offering credit cards to undergraduates. We also required colleges to provide each student with information on personal financial management, including the responsible use of consumer credit.

Funding incentives were also given to the University of Minnesota to increase the number of degrees awarded in science, technology, engineering, math, and health science disciplines.

We also increased the money available through financial aid programs by 12˝ percent.
