The Republican budget cuts to nursing homes over the last few years had a huge impact on seniors, as it became constantly harder to retain good staff to adequately care for them. Therefore, we appropriated $94 million to provide a cost-of-living-adjustment rate increase of two percent, and 75 percent of that has to go to wages and benefits for employees. We also put in an additional $37 million for new mental health initiatives; many seniors will be affected. Additionally, there is some money available for facilities to come into compliance with physical plant improvements, such as sprinkler systems.
We restored some of the funds the Republicans cut during the last several years for the Senior Nutrition program, Senior Companion Program, and other programs, including Meals-on-Wheels.
