COMMUNITY NOTICE

AFFORDABLE HOUSING

Minnesota has the highest growth in number of households that spend more than half their income on housing. Thus, we attempted to restore a large share of the Republican budget cuts to the housing programs. We were able to put almost one-and-a-half times as much money in affordable housing as during the prior Republican years. There are several programs set up to aid homeless and low-income people in their quest for rental or ownership housing. There are also some programs for medium-income people, as well as rehabilitation loans for homeowners with incomes under $18,000 who need to correct health and safety hazards.

We also gave a preference to disabled veterans by giving them priority when they apply for public housing.

Unfortunately, the governor cut one important grant program. As we can see from the huge problems occurring in our community of boarded-up houses (often caused by predatory lending practices), counseling is desperately needed to keep people from getting into predatory mortgages they can’t afford to repay. We provided a large amount of money to counsel people who are facing foreclosure or to keep them out of predatory mortgages. Unfortunately, most of the money for these grants was cut by the governor.
