DON’T ALLOW ANYONE TO SEND MATERIALS TO YOU IN THE MAIL WITH YOUR SOCIAL SECURITY NUMBER ON IT

In the past, many institutions would send out mail with your Social Security number on it (in addition to other information) usually for their own convenience. Under a new law, which went into effect July 1, a Social Security number may not be printed on any materials that are mailed to an individual, unless it is required on the document as a matter of state or federal law. Also, individuals are not required to submit their numbers over a website, unless a password or other identifying device is also required to access the site.
