ST. PAUL – Rep. Paul Marquart was recognized by the Coalition of Greater Minnesota Cities for his work on behalf of Local Government Aid Thursday (July 28) at the coalition’s three-day summer conference in Moorhead, Minn.
Marquart, a Democrat from Dilworth, received the coalition’s Legislator of Distinction Award for tax policy and served as one of the conference’s keynote speakers.
Tim Flaherty, the coalition’s executive director, said Marquart went the extra mile last session by authoring important legislation that would have restored $60 million to Local Government Aid funding.
“Rep. Marquart used his background as an educator and a former mayor to gain support from his peers to restore $60 million in LGA funding by closing corporate loopholes," Flaherty said. “Even though the amendment failed on a 67-67 vote, it generated a worthwhile debate about property tax disparities throughout the state. We are grateful for his leadership in rural Minnesota.”
The CGMC is a nonprofit advocacy organization that represents 71 cities outside of the Twin Cities metropolitan area. The coalition educates legislators about issues important to greater Minnesota.
