St. Paul, Minnesota — Today Minnesota Management and Budget announced that the February budget forecast shows a projected budget deficit of $627 million for fiscal years 2014-15. This is an improvement from the November budget forecast that showed a projected deficit of $1.1 billion. Fiscal year 2012-13 is now projected to have a positive balance of $295 million, $290 million of which is directed to paying back the school shift, leaving a balance of $801 million remaining.
Rep. Paul Marquart (DFL – Dilworth) released the following statement:
“While today’s forecast is certainly welcome news, the failed policies of gimmicks and squeezing the middle class have left us with a decade of deficits that we must reverse. We need to think big again and go in a new direction that puts the middle class first. We need to invest again in education and put our kids on the path to the world’s best workforce. And we have to balance the budget honestly without gimmicks. With that, we will build a better Minnesota.
“Over the coming days and weeks budget discussions will pick up and the task of improving our education system and future workforce will continue. I look forward to working with my colleagues to get the job done.”
