Statement on Governor Dayton’s Budget Proposal

St. Paul, Minnesota — Today, Governor Dayton unveiled his proposed budget for the next two fiscal years. The state is facing a $1.1 billion budget deficit and owes its schools another $1.1 billion. Governor Dayton’s budget includes $118 million in new K-12 funding, including $52 in new money for every student, $92 million in early learning, $40 million for optional all-day Kindergarten, and $240 million in new higher education funding. The budget proposal also includes $1.4 billion in direct property tax relief through a $500 property tax rebate, and increases aid to local governments and counties by $120 million.

House Education Finance Committee Chair Rep. Paul Marquart (DFL – Dilworth) released the following statement:

“I am pleased Governor Dayton put forward a budget that balances without gimmicks and makes necessary investments in our future. Every Minnesota student deserves a high-quality education to help them succeed. For too many years we’ve failed to make the necessary investments to help our economy and middle class grow. Education is a critical component to a stronger Minnesota.

“The governor’s budget also provides long overdue direct property tax relief to Minnesotans. We’ve seen property taxes double over the last eight years for Minnesota families and businesses. Direct relief will help middle-class Minnesotans put more money in their pockets and drive economic growth.

“This is just a first step in the budget process. We need to take a close look at the governor’s budget, gather more details, and get input from constituents. I look forward to working with Governor Dayton on a budget that moves Minnesota forward and builds a stronger middle class.”
