ST. PAUL – Today, Minnesota House Speaker-designate Paul Thissen appointed State Representative Paul Marquart as chair of the influential Education Finance Committee. Marquart, who is set to begin his 7th term in the House, is a longtime public school teacher who supports reforms to increase student achievement.
"I am very honored and pleased with the confidence Speaker-designate Paul Thissen has shown in me with this appointment," Marquart said. "For Minnesota to have a world class economy we need to have a world class education system. This requires education funding that promotes increased student performance and closes the achievement gap.”
The Education Finance Committee is charged with setting the state budget for elementary and secondary education. Funding for education is the largest spending item in the state budget.
"I think there is wide agreement that improving public education and making its funding fair and stable is a top budget priority in the 2013 session," Marquart explained. "I look forward to working with the public, Governor Dayton, Education Commissioner Dr. Brenda Cassellius, and the Legislature."
