House GOP Tax Chair embraces elimination of the Homestead Credit
State Rep. Paul Marquart (DFL-Dillworth), Minority Lead on the Property and Local Sales Tax Division, released the following statement in response to the tax proposal released by Rep. Greg Davids today.
"We learned today that Republicans are all settled to saddle Minnesotans with a big property tax increase in 2012.
Homeowners hoping for a reprieve from Republicans who raised their property taxes by eliminating the Homestead Credit will be sorely disappointed today. The proposal introduced by Rep. Greg Davids will do nothing to mitigate the sticker shock waiting for thousands of Minnesotans when they get their 2012 property tax statement in the mail this month.
The collateral damage from the Homestead Credit elimination represents $261 million in lost property relief in 2012 and a total of $538 million over the next two years. Instead of trying to clean up this property tax raising mess, Rep. Davids embraced it. His plan includes only $80 million and does nothing to address the tax increase awaiting Minnesotans in 2012 as a result of the Homestead Credit elimination.
Minnesotans across the state rightly feel stress and concern about paying higher property taxes once again. They deserve a real solution with real property tax relief. We invite Republican Tax Chair Davids and his Republican colleagues to reconsider and join DFL representatives who have introduced legislation to restore the Homestead Credit."
