St. Paul, MN – State Representative Paul Marquart commended Governor Mark Dayton on Tuesday for his fair and balanced approach to resolving Minnesota’s budget deficit.
Marquart said that for the first time in eight years, this budget proposal does not solve state budget problems on the backs of middle-income property owners, including seniors, farmers, small businesses and young families.
As former chair of the Property Tax Division, Marquart said he was thrilled to see that Dayton’s budget does not include any reductions to local government aid programs. Cuts such as these not only force communities to eliminate critical services such as police and fire fighters, they also drive up property taxes.
“As a property tax guy, the Governor’s budget is great news to me," said Marquart. “Property taxes have increased by 85% over the last few years; enough is enough.”
Governor Dayton’s plan also includes a funding increase for K-12 schools, focusing both on educating the 14,000 additional students that will attend Minnesota schools next year, and on paving a path for all-day kindergarten for every student.
“No matter where they live in this state, every student has the right to a good education,” said Marquart. “All-day kindergarten is widely recognized as a critical first step in a child’s education; this plan makes that do-able for every district in the state.”
Marquart said that as a representative from a rural district, funding for schools and support for aid to cities and counties are key to maintaining a good quality of life.
“This is an honest, straight up budget that protects property taxpayers around the state and supports our schools,” said Marquart. “I want to thank Governor Dayton for his hard work on finding a responsible solution that lays the groundwork for economic recovery and long-term prosperity for Minnesota.”
