ST. PAUL—Rep. Paul Marquart was recognized by the Coalition of Greater Minnesota Cities (CGMC) July 31 at the Coalition’s three-day summer conference in Mankato, Minn. for his positive impact on the state’s tax policy.
Rep. Marquart, a Democrat from Dilworth, is serving his fourth term in the Minnesota House of Representatives. The Legislator of Distinction Award is given to legislators who played key roles in CGMC’s policy success during the preceding session.
As chair of the House Property Tax Division, Rep. Marquart pushed for a substantial increase in Local Government Aid (LGA), the state’s program that helps cities provide an equal level of basic services without burdening local tax payers—even though the state was facing a nearly $1 billion deficit. In 2003, the LGA program suffered substantial cuts, and has yet to recover the same amount of funding as was appropriated five years ago. As a result of Sen. Marquart’s work, LGA was increased by $42 million.
“Rep. Marquart understands the challenges cities and tax payers are facing in these difficult economic times," remarked CGMC President Wayne Wolden, Mayer of Wadena. “His commitment to funding LGA is a commitment to stimulating greater Minnesota’s economy and providing property tax relief to tax payers.”
CGMC is a nonprofit, nonpartisan advocacy organization representing 80 cities outside of the Twin Cities metropolitan area. The Coalition educates legislators about issues important to greater Minnesota.
