ST. PAUL - Minnesota House Speaker-designate Margaret Anderson Kelliher recently appointed State Representative Paul Marquart of Dilworth to chair the Property Tax Relief & Local Sales Tax Division of the House Taxes Committee when the Legislature reconvenes this January.
"I am honored to be chosen to chair this committee," Marquart said. "I'm looking forward to working on legislation that benefits all Minnesotans. Property tax relief will be a major issue during the 2007 legislative session."
Marquart said his committee's top priority is going to be creating permanent property tax relief. The former Dilworth mayor said his constituents have told him that property tax increases are becoming a big concern.
"The continued under funding of state aid to schools, towns, cities, and counties have resulted in out of control increases in property taxes," Marquart added. "High property taxes have hit everyone hard across the state, but especially hard in Greater Minnesota."
Marquart, who was first elected to the Legislature in 2000, joins a group of committee chairs that collectively represent every region in Minnesota.
