ST. PAUL - State Representative Paul Marquart is inviting local high school students to experience their state government first-hand by applying for the House of Representatives High School Page Program. This program allows high school juniors to spend a week at the Capitol in St. Paul meeting with state representatives and assisting members during legislative session.
"This is one of the best ways to learn about state government," Marquart said. "Pages are right there on the House floor with us when we debate and vote on legislation."
Students selected for the program will meet individually with House members and discuss issues that matter to them, assist members during session, and participate in mock committee debates to inspire them to think critically about the issues facing our state. Students will also have an opportunity to meet with constitutional officers, members of the judiciary, lobbyists and members of the media. The Minnesota House of Representatives High School Page Program, now in its 32nd year, is one of only three in the country, modeled after a similar program in the United States Congress.
Minnesota high school students in their junior year are encouraged to submit an application by November 15, 2006, and if admitted, will be assigned to participate for one week between January and May 2007 with other students from across the state. Applications are available online, at http://www.house.leg.state.mn.us/edprog/introletter.asp or by calling the House Educational Programs Office at 651-296-7452. If you have any questions, please contact Rep. Marquart at 1-800-551-5520 or at rep.paul.marquart@house.mn.
