REP. MARIANI RESPONDS TO PASSAGE OF ALTERNATIVE TEACHER LICENSURE
ST. PAUL — Today the Minnesota House of Representatives passed the conference committee report on HF 63/SF 40, a bill modifying the state’s alternative teacher licensure program. Rep. Carlos Mariani (DFL – St. Paul) was a member of the conference committee and voted in favor of the conference committee report.
Rep. Mariani released the following statement on the bill’s passage:
“I’m encouraged by the fact that we were able to reach a bipartisan agreement with Governor Dayton. When it comes to providing the best education for the children of Minnesota, and making strong, creative reforms, Democrats and Republicans have to come together. A positive future for our children should be free from partisan politics.
“While I still have some concerns, namely the weak connection to our higher education institutions and the weak student teaching component, I am pleased with the stronger content knowledge requirements. This is a good compromise. This is a direction we need to move in, and need to move in it now.
“When this bill becomes law it will be a solid first step in addressing our teacher shortage and closing our achievement gap. As time goes along and the program is implemented, I look forward to studying its impact, pursuing further improvements, and holding the Board of Teaching accountable."
