State Representative Carlos Mariani Chairs NALEO Session
ST. PAUL – Today State Representative Carlos Mariani chaired a session (New Pipeline Strategies to Increase Opportunities for Latinos in the Health Professions: Addressing the Nation’s Medical and Workplace Needs) at the National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials (NALEO) Conference in Washington, D.C.
“This was a wonderful opportunity to serve as a chair for NALEO, a non-partisan leadership organization of the nation’s more than 6,000 Latino elected and appointed officials," said State Representative Carlos Mariani. “Members represent all political parties, all levels of government, and diverse constituencies from metropolitan cities to rural communities.”
Currently the total number of U.S. trained medical professionals is inadequate to meet our nation’s healthcare needs, especially in low-income areas with proportions of Latinos. The on-going national discussion on health care reform highlights the emerging implications for shortages in the health care workforce and the imperative need to increase the number of Latinos serving in the medical profession.
“We used the session to address education obstacles that often limit Latino representation in the medical field and to explore innovative strategies to fill the professional gap in the medical field with the talented minds of our nation’s Latino students,” said State Representative Carlos Mariani.
