ST. PAUL – State Representative Carlos Mariani, District 65B, supports the Freedom to Breathe Act of 2007. Passage of this legislation will establish public policy to protect employees and the public from hazards of secondhand smoke and prohibit individuals from smoking in specified areas.
"I've been very public about my support for this proposed act. My primary interest is to protect public health and get control of the huge and growing public health expenditures being driven by tobacco illnesses, especially for those inflicted by second hand smoke," said Mariani. "My physician recently informed me that at least 1/3 of his patient load is attributable to tobacco. We all pay for a health care system driven by the choice of those who smoke. We also pay for those who become ill through second hand exposure to smoke - something those people did not choose to be exposed."
