MAHONEY RESPONDS TO GOP JOBS AGENDA PRESS CONFERENCE

(ST. PAUL) – State Representative Tim Mahoney (DFL-St. Paul), the DFL Lead on the House Jobs and Economic Development committee, responded today to a Republican press conference announcing their intent to develop a jobs agenda for the 2012 legislative session.

“My Republican colleagues were correct in announcing that job growth and economic development are bipartisan issues. I only wish they were consistent in supporting the policies that help grow jobs across Minnesota.

“Property tax relief is important to businesses. That’s why it’s confusing that Republicans fought to increase property taxes on businesses earlier this year. Repealing the homestead credit meant businesses lost $70 million in property tax relief.

“I support looking at state regulations and policies surrounding economic growth and business development. However, the Republican plan to create a new bureaucracy would take years to reach consensus around a plan. Our fragile economy does not have the luxury of waiting for a Republican jobs plan that won’t have an effect until at least 2013.

“There is no shortage of effective ideas in the Minnesota Legislature to grow jobs in Minnesota. Unfortunately, the majority party has stood in the way of common sense solutions such as connecting Minnesota businesses with federal grants and export contracts. As legislators, we should be making it easier to commercialize billions of dollars of research at the University of Minnesota. Promoting the start up and expansion of small and medium-sized businesses should be our priority, rather than an afterthought."
