ST. PAUL - St. Paul's East Side is home to a chain of five lakes area communities have long-treasured for their unique recreational and environmental importance. Lake Phalen, Round Lake, Keller Lake, Gervais Lake, Willow Lake, and Kohlman Lake make the East Side a better, more beautiful place to live. However, these lakes have been struggling in recent years due to the lack of a community vision. Now, State Rep. Tim Mahoney (DFL - St. Paul) is spearheading an effort to revitalize the lakes, and restore area parks.
"I've enjoyed the lakes for years - on a bike ride or a walk, for a barbeque or a picnic," said Rep. Mahoney. "But like many people in our community, I'm concerned about the lack of a long-term plan and investment strategy for our area lakes. Thoughtful planning must be undertaken to preserve these resources for future generations."
Working collaboratively with the Metropolitan Council and cities of St. Paul, Maplewood, and Little Canada, Rep. Mahoney hopes to empower community members to begin the planning process. By joining efforts, Mahoney is convinced the community can develop a plan to clean up the lakes, restore area parks, and revitalize the city's recreational and environmental life.
"This joint effort must move forward quickly in order to present an effective, comprehensive, strategic plan to the local city councils and other area legislators before the next budget cycle begins in January," said Mahoney. "Together, with hard work, a common vision, and one ambitious, unified effort we can create a chain of lakes patterned after our Minneapolis neighbors."
Mahoney is inviting all citizens to attend a meeting at 6:30pm Wednesday, July 30 at the Phalen Golf Course Clubhouse (1615 Phalen Dr. E.) to begin the process immediately. This first meeting will be an opportunity to provide initial feedback about the direction the community would like the planning process to take. A task force will be drawn from those attending this first meeting to work with area cities and the Metropolitan Council to specify a strategic plan moving forward.
There will be more opportunities for additional public input throughout the process. Community members interested in serving on the task force, but are unable to attend the July 30 meeting, please contact Joanna Dornfeld at joanna.dornfeld@house.mn or by phone at (651) 296-9302.
