JOIN THE EFFORT TO RESTORE OUR LOCAL LAKES

The East Side is home to a chain of five lakes our community has always treasured for their unique recreational and environmental importance. Lake Phalen, Round Lake, Keller Lake, Gervais Lake, Willow Lake, and Kohlman Lake make our neighborhoods a better, more beautiful place to live.

Like many of you, I've enjoyed the lakes for years - on a bike ride or a walk, for a barbeque or a picnic. But, unfortunately we haven't focused enough attention on these precious treasures. And like many of you, I'm extremely concerned about the lack of investment, long-term maintenance, and thoughtful planning that needs to be undertaken to preserve these resources for future generations.

The lack of an updated, strategic plan to preserve our lakes and keep our parks clean has allowed this to happen. But together, working collaboratively with the Metropolitan Council and cities of St. Paul, Maplewood, and Little Canada, we can do something about it. By joining efforts, we can develop a plan to clean up our lakes, revitalize our parks, and make our community beautiful again.

This joint effort must move forward quickly in order to present an effective, comprehensive, strategic plan to the local city councils and other area legislators before the next budget cycle begins in January. For that reason, I'm inviting all citizens to attend a meeting at 6:30pm Wednesday, July 30 at the Phalen Golf Course Clubhouse (1615 Phalen Dr. E.) to begin this process immediately.

This first meeting will be an opportunity to provide initial feedback about the direction our community would like the planning process to take. A task force will be drawn from those attending this first meeting to work with area cities and the Metropolitan Council to specify a strategic plan moving forward.

There will be more opportunities for additional public input throughout the process. If you are interested in serving on the task force, but are unable to attend the July 30 meeting, please contact Joanna Dornfeld at joanna.dornfeld@house.mn or by phone at (651) 296-9302.

Together, with hard work, a common vision, and one ambitious, unified effort we can create a chain of lakes that rivals our Minneapolis neighbors. If you have any additional questions about how to get involved in this important effort, please contact me by email at rep.tim.mahoney@house.mn or by phone at (651) 296-4277.

I look forward to working with you.
