Minneapolis, MN – State Representative Phyllis Kahn (DFL – Minneapolis), state chair of Women Legislator’s Lobby, is pleased to be a legislative host for the event, “Women in Afghanistan: Securing their Future."
“The wars in Afghanistan have sparked much debate as to the status of Afghan women,” said Rep. Kahn. “I believe taking time in honor of International Women’s Day to discuss the plight and perceived obstacles for Afghan women moving forward in Afghan society is not only appropriate, but necessary.”
The main speaker of the event, David Cortright, co-authored Afghan Women Speak: Enhancing Security and Human Rights in Afghanistan. Additionally, Cortright teaches peace studies and non-violent change at the University of Notre Dame, as well as the Director of Policy Studies for Notre Dames Kroc Institute for International Peace Studies.
“I am enthusiastic to have Dr. Cortright as our chief speaker,” said Rep. Kahn. “As an expert in international peace movements, I am sure he will offer a unique perspective on this important subject.”
In addition to Women Legislator’s Lobby, the event is also sponsored by Women’s Action for New Directions and The Center on Women and Public Policy at the Humphrey School. In addition to these sponsors, Rep. Kahn is pleased to be introducing Congressman Keith Ellison as a speaker.
“Women in Afghanistan: Securing their Future,” will be held this Friday, March 9 at the Humphrey School of Public Affairs Atrium, located at 301 19th Avenue S in Minneapolis. The program begins at 7:00 p.m. with a social hour just before at 6:30 p.m.
