2012 SESSION UPDATE

Dear neighbors,

Scam artists and predatory lenders take advantage of consumers from all walks of life, causing hardship in our communities.

Knowledge is often the foundation of financially secure communities and a consumer’s best defense against the pitfalls of predatory lending.

Commerce Commissioner Mike Rothman, Human Rights Commissioner Kevin Lindsay, Housing Financial Authority Commissioner Mary Tingerthal and community leaders will hold a town hall forum to discuss predatory lending and its impact on Minnesota communities. It will be held at 6 p.m., April 18 at the Dayton’s Bluff Recreational Center on Conway Street.

The topics of discussion will be home foreclosures, damaged personal finances, negative impacts on communities/neighborhoods and current practices used by predatory lenders.

The objectives of this forum are to educate attendees about the resources available through our state agencies to guard themselves against predatory lenders, to hear testimony about predatory lending trends, and to provide staff members to take consumer complaints.

The forum is free and open to the public. Contact Ben Hill with questions at 651-296-5282 or Benjamin.hill@state.mn.us.

I have worked on the issue of predatory lending in the Legislature this session. I was a supporter of the DFL’s Supporting Responsible Homeowners and Stabilizing Neighborhoods Act, which would have provided immediate help to Minnesota’s homeowners worked hard, played by the rules and still found themselves in danger of losing their houses. It would have expanded the refinancing options for many homeowners, prevented needless foreclosures and demanded greater transparency from lending institutions.

If my work at the Capitol allows it, I plan on attending this town hall, and I encourage all of my constituents with concerns about this issue to attend, as well.

Sheldon
