2012 SESSION UPDATE

Dear Neighbors,

An important legislative proposal was introduced last week by me and several of my metro area colleagues. The bill, the Supporting Responsible Homeowners and Stabilizing Neighborhoods Act, would provide immediate help to Minnesota’s homeowners who have worked hard, played by the rules and still found themselves in danger of losing their houses. It expands the refinancing options for many homeowners, prevent needless foreclosures and demand greater transparency from lending institutions.

We also received the updated economic forecast last week. Good news: an additional $323 million “surplus.” Of course, there is no surplus; we still owe our schools more than $2 billion from the Republican school shift last year that they used to balance the state’s budget. We’re staring at a structural deficit of $1.1 billion for the next budget cycle.

As we get closer to the end of this session, you may find that you have questions about the issues we have yet to address – jobs, bonding, the Vikings stadium – or input on those we have. If you do, feel free to contact me and I will do my best to address your concerns.

Sheldon
