State Rep. Sheldon Johnson introduces high priority bill to fund much-needed Science Education Center at Metropolitan State University Existing space inadequate in meeting current and future needs

Given the high rate of unemployment and an increasingly competitive global economy, the importance that students have access to higher education in growing fields cannot be overstated. A new Science Education Center at Metropolitan State University will go a long way in meeting the state’s need for graduates in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.

“I am proud to introduce a bill to fund construction of a Science Education Center at Metropolitan State University. The Science Education Center is sorely needed to support the rapidly growing Nursing and Health Science programs and other science degrees. The existing facilities are clearly inadequate in term of space, equipment, efficiency and the number of students that can be served," stated Rep. Sheldon Johnson.

Rep. Johnson’s bill seeks $31 million in state general obligation bonds to construct the new 59,000 square foot facility. The pre-design for the project was completed with funding from a previous bonding bill.

“This project is a win-win for the state’s economic recovery. It will give students access to needed post-secondary science education and it will help meet Minnesota’s future workforce needs,” said Johnson.

In addition, Metropolitan State University enrolls a high percentage of under-served student populations including students of color, adult students and working students.
