MINNESOTA BUDGET DEFICIT AT $5 BILLION - RESPONSE TO FORECAST

(ST. PAUL) – Responding to an updated budget forecast by state finance officials today, Rep. Sheldon Johnson (DFL-St. Paul) noted the hard choices facing the state. “Minnesota’s finances are in need of structural reform," said Johnson. Minnesota is projected to face a $5 billion deficit for the 2012-13 fiscal biennium, less than the $6.2 billion projected late last year.

“Our budget solution needs to be balanced,” commented Johnson. “The Republican promise of a cuts-only budget will create a Minnesota that we will not recognize.” The House Republican majority has stated their intent to release a budget solution soon. “It is critical that we create jobs, not cut them. I am very concerned that the GOP majority will follow their pledge to return to the failed policies of the past.”

Johnson, who represents St. Paul’s East Side pledged to protect his constituents’ pocketbooks. “The policies of the Pawlenty administration have squeezed working families. We must balance the budget fairly and equitably, and not on the backs of the middle class. That includes a progressive income tax structure,” continued Johnson. “The Republican-proposed property tax increases will further harm hard working families in my district and across the state.”

“Governor Dayton has kept his promise and proposed an honest budget,” said Johnson. “It is time for Republicans to quit playing rhetorical games and produce a budget that prepares Minnesota for the future.”
