ST. PAUL, MN – State Rep. Sheldon Johnson (DFL – Saint Paul) was appointed to a key committee position today in the Minnesota House of Representatives. Johnson, recently elected to his seventh term in the Minnesota Legislature, will serve as the DFL lead on the House Judiciary Committee – a committee responsible for overseeing the state’s judicial and corrections systems.
“Chronic budget deficits have cut our courts and corrections system to the bone," said Rep. Johnson. “Facing another $6.2 billion state budget shortfall this session, the decisions aren’t going to get any easier. But we must do everything possible to ensure justice and safety for all Minnesotans.”
Johnson, a retired Ramsey County Corrections officer, has seen the impact of deep budget cuts firsthand. With more than 30 years of experience in the corrections system, he brings firsthand knowledge of the challenges facing the courts, prison system, and rehabilitation services.
“I look forward to working with Governor-elect Mark Dayton, my colleagues in the Senate, and the new Republican majority to address the many challenges facing our judicial and corrections systems,” Johnson said. “Despite the serious deficit we now face, I am confident that working together we can find solutions to adequately fund our justice system, protect jobs, and preserve the integrity and functionality of our justice system.”
