THE MOST IMPORTANT DISCUSSION IN MINNESOTA

To the Editor:

Minnesota’s most important discussion in a generation will take place in just a few short weeks. On September 8, legislative leaders and former governors will sit down at the same table to share ideas on the two biggest concerns facing Minnesotans today: 1) a roller coaster budget threatening our quality of life, and 2) a state economy lagging behind other Midwest states.

Moody’s economist Steve Cochrane has been saying for months that discussions like this are exactly what states like Minnesota need to be doing right now. Cochrane argues that states need to be proactive in order to fully recover and remain competitive in a 21st Century global economy.

At a time when Oklahoma and Missouri are coming out of recession quicker than Minnesota, and our state is facing another record budget deficit, it’s more important than ever to take Mr. Cochrane’s advice. That’s why the Minnesota Leadership Summit is so important - it’s why we need all our leaders at the table, working together.

Governors Carlson, Quie, and Anderson will be in attendance at the Leadership Summit. But Governor Tim Pawlenty is following Jesse Ventura’s example, and calling in sick. It is unfortunate that our current governor couldn’t pencil-in the business of the state on his jam-packed national campaign schedule.

Minnesotans admire Governor Pawlenty’s presidential ambitions, but we wish he would take the time to focus on Minnesota first - particularly when the challenges facing our state are so concerning.
