STATE REP. SHELDON JOHNSON ANNOUNCES CLEANUP GRANT AWARDED FOR ST. PAUL HOSPITAL LINEN SITE

ST. PAUL - State Representative Sheldon Johnson (DFL-St. Paul) was pleased with the news this week that the City of St. Paul has been awarded a Contamination Cleanup grant from the Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development (DEED) for old Hospital Linen site on St. Paul's East Side.
"I'm pleased that DEED recognized how important cleaning up this site is to future economic development in St. Paul," said Johnson, chair of the House Telecommunications Regulation and Infrastructure Division, and a key advocate in pursuing the grant funding. "This grant helps clear the way for future-looking, mixed-use development that will help revitalize and sustain that East Side neighborhood."
The $545,000 grant will be used to cleanup the development site and prepare it for construction. Contamination cleanup will consist of asbestos and lead-based paint abatement, soil vapor mitigation and soil remediation. Eventual development will include mixed-use housing, commercial and retail space, structured parking and pedestrian connections.
"This kind of redevelopment project is truly exciting for St. Paul," said Johnson. "It will offer flexible, efficient and connected housing options that are fully integrated within existing neighborhoods. It's the kind of smart development we should be pursuing, and a good example of public and private entities working together – it's a winning combination."
