Saint Paul, Minnesota – House DFL members are calling the House GOP omnibus bill released today an irresponsible proposal that hides the impact of significant cuts to seniors and the disabled.
“Time after time this session, we’ve seen the Majority pass the buck - abdicating their responsibility to govern," said Minority Leader Paul Thissen (DFL – Minneapolis) “We see the same reckless refusal to take responsibility in the HHS budget proposal.”
State Rep. Tom Huntley (DFL – Duluth), DFL lead on the House Health Care and Human Service Finance committee, said the bill includes reckless cuts without consideration for their impact.
“They haven’t done their job, plain and simple,” said Huntley. “As a result, we have an incomplete proposal. The lack of transparency on a bill that affects every community in our state is an extremely irresponsible way to govern.”
“There is almost no time for public input on a bill that affects Minnesotans in every community in our state,” said State Rep. Tina Liebling (DFL-Rochester), DFL lead on Health Care and Human Service Reform committee. “I don’t know how any member of the Legislature could vote for a proposal like this without having a chance to listen to their constituents and figure out how it will affect the seniors, children and families they serve.”
“You just can’t make cuts this deeply in HHS without affecting early childhood,” said State Rep. Nora Slawik (DFL – Maplewood), DFL lead on early education. “Republicans should come clean and let Minnesotans weigh in so we can make informed decisions based on sound public policy.”
