Representative Debra Hilstrom and the state Attorney General's office have sent a letter to the Public Utilities Commission (PUC) and several Minnesota utilities asking them to waive reconnection fees and deposits for low income gas customers receiving heating assistance this winter. By doing so, federal funding could be stretched further to meet the increasing requests for low-income heating assistance. Heating a home with natural gas is projected to cost 50% more this winter than it did last year.
"People in Brooklyn Center and Brooklyn Park are worried about the rising cost of heating their homes," Rep. Hilstrom stated. "This is especially hard on seniors living on a fixed income. We want to make sure that no one is forced to go without heat."
The request grew from communication between Rep. Hilstrom and the PUC, the state commission charged with regulating utilities. "After hearing from multiple constituents concerned about rising natural gas prices, I contacted the commission directly to find out what could be done to help residents make it through the winter," Rep. Hilstrom explained. In response, the PUC convened a public meeting October 20th with a briefing from utilities on natural gas prices.
The five utilities that received the letter from Rep. Hilstrom and the Attorney General are still considering whether to waive the fees.
