REP. HILSTROM APPLAUDS GOVERNOR DAYTON’S COMMITMENT TO POLICE, PUBLIC SAFETY

(ST. PAUL) — Today, Governor Dayton released his Supplemental FY12-13 Budget proposal. The proposal includes $515,000 to go to the fund that reimburses state and local police officers for buying bulletproof vests. Currently, Minnesota police officers buy their own bulletproof vests and are then reimbursed by the state. However, the fund has been depleted and there are currently more than 700 vests awaiting reimbursement.

Rep. Debra Hilstrom (DFL – Brooklyn Center) is the Deputy Minority Leader and former chair of the House Public Safety Policy and Oversight Committee and released the following statement:

“From day one, Governor Dayton has shown his strong commitment to helping our police officers and improving public safety in our state, and today’s proposal continues that. Our officers should never be in a position where they can’t afford the equipment they need to be safe.

“I applaud Governor Dayton’s decision to include this funding in his supplemental budget and will work to pass it into law. We have an obligation and a duty to ensure that our police officers are able to do their jobs as safely as possible."
