SURPLUS WELCOME, BUT FUTURE DEBT AND DEFICITS REMAIN

(ST. PAUL) — Today, Minnesota Management and Budget announced that the state has an unexpected $876 million surplus for the rest of this biennium. Current law states that the surplus must go to the state’s cash flow account and budget reserves.

Deputy Minority Leader Debra Hilstrom (DFL – Brooklyn Center) released the following statement on today’s announcement:

“Today’s announcement of a surplus is certainly welcome news, but while it looks like we’re taking one step forward, the Republican majority’s irresponsible budget has already taken us two steps back.

“We owe our school children billions, with no plan to pay it back. Republicans raised property taxes on families and small businesses with the elimination of the Homestead Credit. And for the first time, we’re engaging in Washington-style deficit spending through the use of tobacco bonds. Minnesota will be facing another budget deficit next biennium, and in total Republicans have left us with $4.2 billion in debt and deficits.

“It’s time to return to responsible budgeting with a focus on building a strong middle class and a high-quality education system."
