Rep. Paul Thissen names caucus leadership positions - Rep. Debra Hilstrom tapped as Deputy Minority Leader

Minnesota House Minority Leader Paul Thissen has named five fellow members to serve as House DFL Caucus leaders during the 87th Legislative Session.

"From the budget crisis to a host of other issues, there is no shortage of work to be done," said Rep. Thissen. "As I talk with members, it is clear our caucus is energized and ready to tackle the challenges that await us. I am gratified by the number of people who want to serve."

Rep. Debra Hilstrom will be the Deputy Minority Leader during the upcoming biennium. She will help craft and execute caucus strategy. Rep. Hilstrom represents Brooklyn Center and currently chairs the House Public Safety Policy and Oversight Committee. She was first elected to the House in 2000.

"We will make sure the priorities of ordinary Minnesotans remain front and center in this budget debate," said Rep. Hilstrom. "The people of Minnesota are worried about jobs, public safety, good schools and making tuition affordable."

Four other caucus members will serve as Minority Whips. They are Rep. Larry Hosch of St. Joseph, Rep. Melissa Hortman of Brooklyn Park, Rep. John Lesch of St. Paul and Rep. Terry Morrow of St. Peter.

Rep. Larry Hosch is a small business owner who was first elected to the House in 2004. He served as an Assistant Majority Leader during the most recent legislative session.

"I look forward to making the goals and values of our DFL Caucus clear to Minnesotans," said Rep. Hosch. "I will work to continue to bring the Greater Minnesota perspective to our new leadership."

Rep. Melissa Hortman has also served as a caucus leader in previous legislative sessions. She helps run a small business and has served in the House since 2004.

"We have a very strong team focused on creating jobs and growing Minnesota's economy," said Rep. Hortman. "The House DFL Caucus is already hard at work ensuring the number one issue for the 2011 legislative session will be the creation and retention of jobs in Minnesota."

Rep. John Lesch will begin his 5th term in the House. He also serves as a prosecutor for the City of St. Paul, and as a commissioned officer and infantry platoon leader in the Minnesota Army National Guard.

"We have a permanent structural deficit with a budget shortfall creeping toward $6 billion," Rep. Lesch said. "Tough choices await all legislators. Our role will be to hold Republicans accountable for the fix."

Rep. Terry Morrow represents a southern Minnesota district that includes St. Peter. He was first elected to the House in 2006.

"Serving in a House leadership position is an honor that I am excited to undertake. Minnesota faces significant challenges," Rep. Morrow said. "I plan to continue working hard to craft reasonable, common-sense solutions that help Minnesotans thrive."

"I am very excited to work with this leadership team," said Rep. Thissen. "The team reflects the breadth of our caucus which represents every part of this state. Each of them bring an important set of skills that will serve our caucus and Minnesotans well."
