REPRESENTATIVE DEBRA HILSTROM STATEMENT ON ARIZONA STYLE IMMIGRATION BILL

State Representative Debra Hilstrom, chair of the House Public Safety Policy Committee release a statement in response to Rep. Drazkowski’s introduction of a bill that would make immigration without permission a crime under state law.

“Representative Drazkowski’s legislation arrives with just a few days left in the 2010 legislative session, and at a time in which we are working nearly around the clock to resolve an unprecedented budget crisis caused by Governor Pawlenty’s illegal use of unallotment.

I have not yet had the opportunity to review the proposed legislation. Further, Rep. Drazkowski has not yet requested a hearing, the bill has no Senate companion and committee deadlines have passed. Given those factors, the pace of the session, and the urgent budget challenges that must be addressed, it is unlikely this bill get a hearing in the next 10 days."
