REPRESENTATIVE DEBRA HILSTROM STATEMENT ON MnDOT COMMUNICATION PROCEDURES

On Friday, July 31, a prolonged stoplight outage at Highway 252 and 66th Avenue in Brooklyn Center resulted in a 2 car collision. MnDoT has confirmed that a technician did review the problem but was unable to correct it right away. The technician did not notify local law enforcement of the situation, leaving the 10th busiest intersection in Minnesota unsupervised for nearly 2 and ½ hours, causing a dangerous situation for commuters.

MnDOT does not have a current policy requiring them to notify local law enforcement or traffic officials in similar situation. State Representative Debra Hilstrom, Chair of the House Public Safety Policy Committee who represents the district in which the incident occurred, has written to MnDOT Commissioner Tom Sorel asking for clarification of the current policy and if MnDOT intends to review that policy in light of this incident.

“The good news is that no one was killed or seriously injured in what was clearly a very hazardous situation.

While there may not be a policy currently in place requiring such notification, it would not seem to relieve MnDoT of that obligation. I’m asking them to share what current policy does require in terms of notifying local law enforcement in similar situations, and if they intend to review that policy in light of this incident.

As Chair of the House Public Safety Committee, I share MnDOT’s commitment to ensuring the public safety of all our citizens. I look forward to working with them to make sure common sense policies are applied consistently and promptly, and that adhere to the highest standards of safety for Minnesota drivers."
