MINNESOTA POLICE AND PEACE OFFICERS NAME HILSTROM 2007 LEGISLATOR OF THE YEAR

The Board of Directors of the Minnesota Police and Peace Officers Association (MPPOA) has named State Representative Debra Hilstrom their 2007 Legislator of the Year. According to the group, Hilstrom was recognized for outstanding achievements on behalf of law enforcement and law enforcement officers in the State of Minnesota, not only for 2007 but in previous legislative sessions as well.
"Public safety is the number one responsibility of state government," said Hilstrom, "and the work we do to support the law enforcement community is some of our most important. I'm honored that a group I respect so much shares that belief."
Representative Hilstrom is a member of the House Public Safety Finance Division and is considered one of the legislature's leading public safety advocates. In 2007 she co-authored a comprehensive public safety bill that provides money to hire new peace officers throughout the state and allocates money for cities and counties to pay police overtime compensation. The legislation included a law enforcement emergency fund that directs nearly $500,000 to be shared by police departments in Brooklyn Park and Brooklyn Center to address growing crime concerns.
2007 also saw passage of a bill Hilstrom championed for several years that implements a coordinated emergency response structure - the statewide Allied Radio Matrix for Emergency Response (ARMER)/911 emergency service system.
"I'm humbled to be recognized for my role to improve the public safety of our communities," said Hilstrom. "But I'm even more humbled by the men and women on the front lines every day who work tirelessly to keep us safe and respond quickly in times of need. They're the ones who deserve our recognition and our thanks."
