Saint Paul, Minnesota – House Republicans are expected to vote on the Transportation Conference Committee Report, outlining extensive cuts to Minnesota’s transit services. At a time when many Minnesotans are relying on public transit to ease the squeeze on their pocketbooks when gas prices are at a historic high, State Representative Alice Hausman said enacting this budget will have devastating effects on Minnesotan’s in every community across the state.
“By making these cuts, the GOP is asking seniors, the disabled, students, and hard working Minnesotans to bear the brunt of balancing the budget, as the transit they rely on for getting to work, school, the doctor, and grocery stores will be compromised," said Rep. Hausman. “Cuts must be made, but these budget cuts will diminish the important role transit plays in connecting people with their communities.”
Metro transit would receive an overwhelming cut that is equal to an 85% reduction in funding, severely impacting the accessibility of public transit. Cuts of this magnitude will increase bus fares, cut 450 jobs, and increase traffic congestion.
Greater Minnesota will see the recent progress made in regional transit systems, thrust into reverse. Currently, 4 out of 10 people living in Greater Minnesota are not able to access a needed ride and cuts proposed in this budget will only exacerbate this problem. Communities will feel the financial impact as many folks are cut off from transit services that enable them to be participants in their local economies.
“Even during the most difficult times, we all have a choice,” said Rep. Hausman. “The GOP has chosen to make protecting the wealthiest 2% of Minnesotans from paying their fair share, their top priority. Unfortunately, as a result, the other 98% of Minnesotans will be forced to pay more in order to receive less.”
