Saint Paul, Minnesota – Regarding the passage of SF 1308, a bill that would place the issue of writing into the State’s constitution that marriage is a union between a man and a woman, on the ballot for popular vote, State Representative Alice Hausman issued the following statement:
“Words cannot accurately qualify the deep despair and regret that comes with passage of this amendment.
Already in Minnesota statute, same-sex couples cannot marry and pushing this a step further to write discrimination into our state’s constitution is not only unnecessary, but cruel.
I can only say that my heart goes out to the many families, gay and straight, to which this amendment causes irreparable pain; to the devoted demonstrators who have spent days so passionately standing up for what they believe is true and just and for our state as this is a sad and unfortunate day in Minnesota’s history."
