STATE REPRESENTATIVE ALICE HAUSMAN ON 2010 CAPITAL INVESTMENT BILL

In Moorhead today to survey flood-prevention plans and activities, Governor Tim Pawlenty indicated he will sign the 2010 Capital Investment bill that will soon be headed to his desk. Calling it a “bill we can work with," the governor indicated he will likely trim some items from the bill using line-item veto authority but did not anticipate vetoing the bill in its entirety.

Responding to his remarks, State Representative Alice Hausman, chair of the House Capital Investment Committee released the following statement.

It is very good news to me and to thousands of out-of-work Minnesotans that the Governor says he will sign this bonding bill.

We feel very confident that the bill we’ve written still reflects the core priorities we began with, including a very strong commitment to higher education, to transportation, and to conservation and clean water infrastructure. Additionally, it includes all of the Governor’s priorities - including lifting the cap on the purchase price at Lake Vermillion.

It’s important to note that it is unprecedented to have a bonding bill done this early in the legislative session. As I’ve said all along, an early bonding bill is a good deal for Minnesota taxpayers. By getting projects in the pipeline now, we can take advantage of low interest rates and competitive bids, and get thousands of workers back on the job by this spring’s construction season.

I look forward to bringing the bill to the House floor tomorrow.”
