HOUSE JOBS TASK FORCE TO MEET ON MONDAY - Panel to discuss job creation and capital investment strategies for 2010

The bipartisan House Jobs Task Force will hold its third meeting on Monday, November 30 in St. Paul. The day-long meeting will be chaired by State Representative Alice Hausman, who also serves as the chair of the House Capital Investment Committee.

During Monday’s meeting, the task force will hear from the banking and finance industry about the availability of credit in the current market, and get an update from Minnesota Management and Budget about the progress of new debt service guidelines being crafted by the Pawlenty Administration. The afternoon will include a discussion of what is a responsible level of borrowing and what levels of job creation can be expected from a bonding bill, a report on the MnSCU construction timeline, and extensive public testimony.

Chair Alice Hausman says Monday’s meeting will be useful as the Capital Investment committee crafts the 2010 bonding bill. Hausman noted the strategic approach applied to last year’s bonding bill resulted in a nearly doubled rate of first-year project expenditures - from 15% to more than 26% of state bonding funds going immediately out the door to quickly create more jobs in the private and public sectors.
“Economists and policy makers agree that bonding projects are one of the best ways government can stimulate the economy and disrupt a downward economic spiral," said Hausman. “A strategic approach and stringent accountability for the projects we approve will play a significant role in getting people back to work and getting Minnesota’s economy moving again.”
