HOUSE CAPITAL INVESTMENT DIVISION CONSIDERS MAJOR TRANSIT PROJECTS

The House committee charged with approving money for capital projects and state infrastructure throughout Minnesota fielded a wide-ranging agenda of statewide transitway proposals during a packed committee hearing today. “This may be the most important hearing for our committee this year," said State Representative Alice Hausman, chair of the House Capital Investment Finance Division. “A comprehensive transportation plan will be a cornerstone of this session, and transitway projects should be an essential component of that plan.”
A presentation by the Metro Transitways Development Board offered a glimpse of a fully connected transportation system serving metro, suburban and greater Minnesota. Among bills heard by the committee were funding proposals for the Central Corridor Transit Way, the Red Rock Corridor Central Corridor and the North Shore Express Intercity Rail Initiative. All of the bills were laid over for possible inclusion in the final capital investment bill that will be crafted in coming weeks.
“Minnesota’s economic future depends on our ability to move people and goods efficiently,” said Hausman, a long-time transit proponent. “Creating a regional transitway system will spur economic development, generate new jobs and places to live, and breed new opportunities that put us at the forefront of the nations' most vibrant communities.”
