Email Update: New district maps
State Representative Tom Hackbarth
Feb. 23, 2012
Dear Neighbor,
This week we received new legislative maps which will go into effect this August.
Our statewide "redistricting" process takes place every 10 years. The objective is to use the latest census data to level out any population shifts that occurred the last decade. There will be approximately 40,000 citizens in each House district and about double that per Senate seat. The number of legislators will not change, just the borders they represent.
The “new” House district where I live is reminiscent of the House seat I represented before our last redistricting project took place 10 years ago. It will shift back to the east, including places like Columbus, Ham Lake and Linwood. Western towns like Elk River and Nowthen will be across the new border from me.
You can click here to plug in your address and see a map of what changes are in store for your particular household. You also can click here to see a statewide overview of the new districts.
As for our regular work at the Capitol, it has been a fairly quiet week on the House floor. We are dedicating much of our time to attending committee meetings and meeting with constituents so we can prepare bills for the floor.
It appears less likely bills to build a new Vikings stadium or legalize racino gaming will pass into law this session. These could be completely separate initiatives, or tied together as a means to fund a stadium. Barring a surprise, let’s cross our fingers a breakthrough is reached after the regular session and the governor calls us back for a very brief special session to pass one or both of these proposals.
I will keep you posted.
Sincerely,
Tom Hackbarth
State Representative, District 48A
